A Balanced Diet of Demons

This artwork depicts Shinchū, who exterminates evil spirits that cause harm and illness. Thought to be a glorified form of the silkworm or an imagined being with features of spiders, dragons, and other creatures, Shinchū was said to devour 3,000 tiger demons in the morning and 300 at night. In this scene, skulls and flesh—likely from demons already eaten—lie scattered, while another demon struggles to escape its grasp.
