Legendary Yakuza Boss

Shimizu Jirochō was a famous yakuza boss active in Shimizu, Shizuoka, from the late Edo to Meiji periods. His real name was Yamamoto Chōgorō. During the Boshin War, he recovered and mourned the bodies of fallen soldiers from the former shogunate army, which led to connections with figures such as Yamaoka Tesshū, who later became a chamberlain to Emperor Meiji. After the Meiji Restoration, he became involved in shipping and land reclamation projects near Mount Fuji.
