A photograph taken by Yokoyama Matsusaburō. Yase is a district located at the western foot of Mount Hiei, and its male inhabitants, known as Yase Dōji, traditionally served as carriers of the emperor's palanquin during imperial processions.

Yokoyama Matsusaburō (1838-1884)

A Western-style painter and photographer active from the late Edo to Meiji periods, who learned photography from Russian consul Goshkevich and painting from Lehmann.
