Painterly Cloisonné

This piece is a work of art created using the "musen shippo" (wireless cloisonné) technique, which allows for the expression of shading and gradation. It skillfully depicts Mt. Fuji in summer and billowing white clouds. When it was exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, it was presented not as a craft, but as a painting, despite being made with cloisonné.

Namikawa Sōsuke (1847-1910)

A cloisonné artist who lived during the late Edo period to the Meiji era.
