Royal Guardian of Buddhism

This statue depicts the King of Khotan holding the reins of a lion ridden by Monju Bosatsu. Khotan was a Buddhist kingdom located along the southern Silk Road, south of the Taklamakan Desert. According to legend, the King of Khotan supported and protected Buddhism during the lifetime of the Buddha.
